After the polls close Tuesday: when Denver's results are final, and why the new at-large member will miss the budget votes
Denver's results start posting Tuesday night, but the count isn't final until certification, set for Nov. 24. That's when the at-large winner is sworn in, after the Council has already voted on the 2027 budget.
Polls close at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3. Denver voters are choosing a new at-large City Council member and deciding several city ballot questions, as our ballot guide explains. But election night is only the start of the count.
Why it matters: the results that appear Tuesday night are unofficial, close races can shift as the last ballots are counted, and the timing of certification decides when the Council goes back to 13 members.
The calendar after Election Day
Tuesday night. After polls close at 7 p.m., Colorado counties begin uploading results to the state's election night reporting system, according to the Colorado Secretary of State. Denver posts its own results through the Elections Division. Uploads continue through the night, and counting goes on in the days after.
Fixing a ballot problem. If there's a problem with your signature or ID, your county clerk will send you a notice, and you can fix, or "cure," it by following the clerk's instructions or online through Colorado BallotCure at GoVoteColorado.gov, according to a Secretary of State release. For last year's Nov. 4 election, the cure deadline was Nov. 12, eight days later. The same spacing this year would put it on Wednesday, Nov. 11; check with the Denver Elections Division for the official date.
Certification and swearing-in. The city's vacancy election timeline lists Nov. 24 as the certification date and says the Council member-elect is sworn in that day. The city labels its dates tentative. The page says the top vote-getter "shall qualify and take such office immediately." There is no runoff among the 10 candidates.

Then another campaign. The winner fills the rest of former Council member Sarah Parady's term and must run again in spring 2027, Denverite has reported.
What our records add: the budget will be done before the winner arrives
The Council's budget calendar finishes before Nov. 24:
- Nov. 2: The last night for budget amendments. Ten are on the agenda.
- By noon Nov. 6: The mayor accepts or vetoes amendments.
- Nov. 9: Veto overrides, which need nine votes, and the final vote on the 2027 budget, 26-1547.
- By Nov. 23: The Long Bill, the law that authorizes the spending, 26-1638. The city's budget office plans to file its full text by Nov. 12 so the Council can approve it by the fourth Monday in November, as the charter requires (bill request).
So, if the tentative date holds, the 12 members now seated will make every 2027 budget decision. Under 12 members, a 6-6 tie fails, and an override takes nine of 12.
Close votes have happened. Last year's final vote on the 2026 budget tied 6-6 with one member absent (roll call). This fall, a Council committee split 3-3 on the "best value" contracting bill (26-1540), with one member absent. Our earlier story looks at the close votes one seat can tip.
Campaign money reports. The last pre-election campaign finance report for at-large candidates is due Friday, Oct. 30, according to the city's timeline. The cycle formally closes Dec. 31.
